This course is for adults working with children aged 3 to 4 years. It is the fourth and final course of the foundation course package.

 

Why This Course Matters

At this age, the child begins to show a natural interest in number, quantity, order, and pattern.

Arithmetic is not introduced as a subject.It arises from the child’s need for precision —not “some” or “many,” but “how many exactly?”

Through arithmetic, the child:

• connects number with quantity
• understands order and sequence
• begins to see relationships between numbers

This is the beginning of mathematical thinking.

 

The Foundation is Already Prepared

Exercises of Practical Life and Sensorial Activities lay the foundation for Arithmetic.

Practical Life develops:

• coordination
• concentration
• independence
• order
• control of the hand

Sensorial Activities develop:

• observation
• comparison
• discrimination
• gradation

Together, these experiences prepare the child to understand:

• more and less
• order and sequence
• relationships

These are the essential foundations of arithmetic.

 

What the Child Learns

Around three and a half years, we begin to see children interested in precision.
The child begins to enjoy exactness.

At this stage, the child is introduced to:

• numbers 1 to 10
• their symbols

The child learns:

• each number represents a fixed quantity
• numbers follow a definite order
• each number has its own place

This becomes the foundation for all future mathematics.
